Cara walked into school, head held high. She knew she wasn’t exactly one of the popular kids, but she had her pride, and she was determined to make a good start of things.

Today was her first day of school at Aydindril High, and while Cara might be a lowly freshman, there was no way she was going to act like it.

Still, once she caught sight of Kahlan, she couldn’t help it as her step faltered for a moment.

Kahlan Amnel -- head cheerleader, snob, bitch. Most gorgeous girl Cara had ever seen.

She tried to stop herself, but Cara couldn’t keep her eyes off the brunette as she and her clique of Confessors sauntered by. At the last moment, Kahlan’s gaze shifted, and she was looking straight into Cara’s eyes. Cara felt the impulse to look away, but that stubborn pride made her maintain the eye contact, refusing to back down.

It apparently was the right decision, as Kahlan first looked surprised (not many people dared look at her too long, Cara imagined), but then smiled brightly. She and the other cheerleaders continued down the hallway, but before turning the corner, Kahlan took a last glance over her shoulder, back at Cara, who remained rooted to the spot.

Cara smirked. Maybe high school wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Looking at Sam, she could somehow see that the brunette was having doubts too. How Brooke wished that things could be different. That she could have had the courage to just ask Sam to go with her to Prom, without Harrison.

That’s what she really wanted.

She wasn’t here for Harrison... She was here for Sam.
